Somewhere over the rainbow, (Foamed PVC version), 2016/7. Foamed PVC, wood, acrylic, PVA, water based paint and acrylic spray paint.
A remake and reinterpretation of a larger work created during a Departure Foundation studio residency around 2013. This version began as a maquette for a still intended larger version but during the making it became clear that it should be a stand-alone piece, albeit much smaller than the original inspiration. As the work progressed it also became evident that it required a base and possibly a plinth. The final solution resulted in the partial use of an artists’ easel, with a custom-made fixing, that gives the work a sense of space, openness and light. The viewer is able to walk around the sculpture and appreciate the line, shape, form, colour and depth from varying angles. This colourful incarnation was also inspired by my late mother who always marvelled at rainbows and natural phenomenon. A second version of this idea was created in acrylic in 2017-8, see here: Somewhere over the rainbow, (acrylic version).
Dimensions, including easel legs: 1.44 metre high x 1 metre wide and deep
