Somewhere over the rainbow, (acrylic version), 2017-18. Fluorescent, clear & transparent acrylic, steel, acrylic spray paint.
Following the creation of the acrylic painted PVC foamed version with a black base and black artist easel legs, (referring to additive colour theory), this incarnation was a natural progression, examining the idea from a more specific focus on light. White or clear light is composed of the visible spectrum The clear acrylic base hovers above 3 white light beams that enter from below, travel through the base, (not unlike light hitting a prism), emerging above split into a dynamic composition of rainbow coloured acrylic, that is on the one hand interlocking yet on the other at odds which each other. The mirror finish of the acrylic is highly reflective and seductive, creating additional images and colours through overlapping and deep reflections in the base. All but two colours are fabricated from 5mm thick fluorescent acrylic, selected for its highly saturated and highly luminous edges, and that work in this way due to the properties of white light.
The ‘black’ PVC foamed version was a remake and reinterpretation of a larger work created during a Departure Foundation studio residency around 2013. And like that, this version began as a maquette for a still intended larger version. It is important that the viewer is able to walk around the sculpture and appreciate the line, shape, form, colour and depth from varying angles. The two colourful versions were inspired by my late mother, who always marvelled at rainbows and natural phenomenon.
The sculpture was designed to interlock and self-support, which also allows for complete dismantling.
Dimensions, including legs: 1.48 metre high x 104 cm wide and 94cm deep
